Exceptions work on good software, but I've used PLENTY of freeware that the exception list was ignored. This is getting long, but that is the general reality. If you use the Internet in any way other than gaming, your data can be tracked down.

Games only is a great strategy, but to the script kiddie that is a free arcade and to the pro, it is a slave machine with some extra bonuses to steal. If your machine faces the Internet, it is a target. So it is combination of smart thinking and good technology. They can spoof a friend's acct (how many friends on your list do you actually know?) or just be a hacker in wait, send you a malicious link to what looks like a legit site (but it is spoofed), and gain access to you and your machine that way.

Our gaming world is full of worthless scumbags looking for kids to exploit, so you have to watch vectors you wouldn't normally think of. That will protect you against some trojans and localized malware, but worms crawl through media such as email, im's and especially game chats.

Feel free to buttress your suite with some reputable spyware removal tools, such as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Windows Defender, possibly even SuperAntiSpyware (JUST DO NOT RUN TWO A/V TOOLS ON THE SAME MACHINE - you will crash). Make sure you use a firewall (Kaspersky, Comodo are good for this). Kaspersky is paid for, Comodo is free, the others I am not sure.avoid AVG and Avast as they are not very good. Of course, if you want to replace it (recommended), you could try Kaspersky, Comodo, BitDefender, TrendMicro.there are a few other names that are reputable, but they are more enterprise level. Some of you are going to say "what? are you crazy?" but consider this: a bad A/V will encourage a user to act as if they are protected, leading to poor user behavior whereas having none a user will be more careful. I do not recommend just leaving Norton or McAfee.you are probably better off with nothing than with them. After that, go through your program files and your common files (manually and use the Win Search) to make sure you purge the remaining files. This tool is much better than the standard uninstaller and runs algorithms to find the extra files and registry keys those two A/Vs will leave behind. Google Revo Uninstaller and grab the free version (paid for is good too, but you don't really NEED those features). They are both notoriously difficult to get rid of and act like malware in their own right. Norton and McAfee are very very poor performers, both in their abilities to secure machines and networks as well as their general performance.
Only certain (and generally paid for) A/V suites can remove malware, but even then, there is plenty of malware that requires more than your suite to get rid of. It is great that it triggers, but heuristics often trigger false positives. It is best used for proactive prevention, which also requires knowledge. Many security pros recognize it is a last line of defense and once triggered, usually it is too late.
